Loss-making lost 759,258 more subscribers in May, further shrinking its subscriber base to 258.45 million. Market leader Reliance Jio added the maximum new subscribers at 3.11 million while added 1.02 million subscribers.

At the end of May, Jio had a total subscriber base of 408.79 million while

had 362.18 million, according to the latest subscriber data released by the Telecom Authority of India (Trai) on Tuesday. The total wireless subscriber base rose to 1.15 billion in May 2022 from 1.14 billion in June 2021.

As opposed to the decline in April, wireless subscriptions in urban areas increased by 0.12% on-month to 624.55 million at the end of May. Rural subscription base continued to grow, increasing by 0.4% to 520.96 million in the month.

Reliance Jio continued to have the largest share of the wireless subscriber pie at 35.69%, widening its gap with second placed Airtel, which recorded a market share of 31.62%. Vi’s market share slipped further to 22.56%.

The Trai data showed that both Airtel and Jio have managed to increase their share of active users (VLR) on the date of peak VLR in May. Airtel has 354.86 million active users (97.98% of total subscriber base) followed by

Jio with 383.31 million active subscribers (93.39%).
